First of all before you go any further, can you even run the game with your current setup, or maybe I should say, SHOULD YOU RUN THE GAME WITH YOUR CURRENT SETUP AT ALL????
To find out go here (http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/srtest) . http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/default/media/head2.0.0.0.gifhttp://www.systemrequirementslab.com/referrer/default/media/power_text.0.0.0.gif
What it does
This site provides a One-Click solution that looks at your computer's hardware and system software to determine whether or not your current system can run a particular game.
Ok, If everything checked out and your ready to continue lets get started.
I've been all over all over the internet reading guides on tweaking Call of Duty 4, and for the most part its really hard to determine exactly what the best configuration is for COD 4. It all depends on the person playing, what his or her connection to the internet is, where the server is, the connection of the server, etc. etc, we could go on and on. So I'm going to start off by listing some of the configuration tweaks that I've found that work for me and the other founders in Australia.
Me or Gandalf will be updating this every now and then as we fine tune some things.
The First thing you need to do is turn on some in-game tools so you can visually see exactly how any of the settings that you apply are directly affecting the game in realtime. So start by turning these on below.
In Game Tools:
These commands require you to use the dropdown console in the game.
(To Enable the Console launch the game and in the main menu goto: Options, then goto, Game Options and you will see Enable Console, just change to yes. Now when you hit your ~ key the console will drop down.)
1) /cg_drawfps 1
FPS or Frames Per Second is the number of frames that the computer displays in one second. Anything below 30 FPS will appear choppy to the human eye. To find your frames per second in Call of Duty 4 open your console with the ~ key and type “cg_drawfps 1″. Having a high FPS will make for much smoother and enjoyable gameplay, so what can we do to improve our FPS in Call of Duty 4?
2) /cg_drawlagometer 1
The lagometer is a tool provided to diagnose the condition of your connection, and to let you know when things are proceeding normally and when they are not.
For a more in depth understanding of how to read the lagometer go here (http://www.eft-clan.net/printview.php?t=2101&start=0).
Connection Tweaks:
1) /com_maxfps 125
One of the most important commands in cod4 is the FPS command, and Ill tell you why. You probably already know that more fps makes the game feel much smoother. What you might not know is that COD4 is based on the q3 engine and is designed to work at 125 FPS.What this means for you is that your going to have problems interacting with the game under 125 FPS. This can mean any thing from not being able to climb objects, or even bad hit detection during fire fights. The problem is your fps is set to 85 by default, lets fix it. Bring down you console and type "/com_maxfps 125" (with out "").
3) /cg_fov 80
Next up is the field of view command. FOV(field of view) is basically how much you can see on your monitor at one time. The higher the number the more you can see, which will give you a huge advantage over those who don't use this command. Default is 65 max is 80, to change it bring down your console and type "/cg_fov 80".
4) /cl_maxpackets 100
Maxpackets next, this command command usually helps people who have good fps but bad hit registration. Default is 30 if your fps is set to 125 you should set maxpackets to this "/maxpackets 100".
5) /snaps 30
This command tells the cod4 server how many times to update positions of players, bullets ect per second. Default is 20, setting it to "/snaps 30" should make movement look smother and hits register better. If you have a ping of about 260 and up this may not help you. You can change it back if it doesn't.
6) /r_drawsun 0
Disables the sun and a bunch of effects that is causes saving you a few fps.
7) /cg_brass 0
Turns off shell ejection. Not having to render them should send a few more fps your way, a good addition to your CoD4 config.
Important cod4 config console commands :WTF_LAG:
/com_maxfps 125
/cg_fov 80
/cl_maxpackets 100
/snaps 30
/r_drawsun 0
/cg_brass 0
Punk Buster problem solving will be coming next. Hope this helps some of you. I'm posting an advanced tweak guide for those of you that are more daring, haha!
