so, I have always enjoyed a fairly stable ping of around 105-110 to BH2, and it never really fluxed beyond that, up until recently. nowadays, somewhere in between my place and the server, somethings all screwed up. Is anyone else having these problems? I live in Northwest Washington (the state, not the capital). Here are what I am getting from pingtest.net...
To LA

also, I appear to be screwing up the new layout, could an admin delete the last two threads? apparently if you attach url links, and it freezes while trying to submit the thread, and you refresh, it will resend the request....

I use both, but at 1:30 in the morning, when sitting 10 inches away from the wireless router, and when the only other computer on isn't even on the internet, there should be no issue....

Hey Slayer,
Firstly I have to say you are very lucky having a usual ping of 120-130. Mine is ususally 200-250. I was on last Monday nite Aussie time 9.30 to 11.30 pm. The pings of alot of players were all over the place. Kalsumines was shifting from 250-to 650. Dont really know what was going on. My mate stormtrooper who lives 25 kms from me was 50 pionts higher than me and we are ususally about the same ping. I dont understand it but maybe one of or more technically mided members can. Cheers for now M8

I am usually plugged directly into the switch, all the above tests were done while plugged in...

I did the same test from my home. My internet connection info is as following
ISP: COX communication
Internet plan: Premier cable
download speed max: 30 Mbps
upload speed max: 1.8 Mbps sustained, bursts upto 4-5 mbps
To seattle:

To Los Angeles:

One thing you notice in my results is that my jitter is very low. In simple words, jitter is the measure of predictability of the network. A good network is one which is not congested ( less data flowing on it than its capacity). Bad networks are those with heavy congestion (more data flowing on it that its capacity). In short my guess is that your ISP is routing your data to the game server through very bumpy paths. Why the ISPs choose those congested routes for home users, well, economics mate. I bet they use better routes for their business customers who pay big bucks. Now, for playing cod4 you don't need 30 mpbs connection, you can play just fine on a 3 Mbps DSL connection as long as it is predictable and delivers a consistent data flow.
For the knowledge of all folks reading this post, our game server have a connection of 100mbps download and 100mbps upload over the internet. A big server like BASHHOUSEII with 52 slots needs about 5-6 Mbps to run the most demanding map like SHIPMENT without absolutely any lag at all.
5-6 Mbps is 5-6% of the network bandwidth that is available on the server. In other words, our game server is capable of running atleast 15 cod4 servers with 52 slots each, playing shipment map with all slots filled (total 52x15= 780 players playing)and no even blink. Also, the game server is physically located in the same building where all the lines coming from most ISPs meet on the west coast.
Hope that information will be helpful to some of you in understanding the cause of lag and may be talk to your ISP about a fix or get a better plan if available/possible (works in most cases).

Thanks Gand, I have a ISP that is super pissed off at me right now, so i'm not suprised that I am getting a semi-high ping, even to Seattle. The thing that bugs me, is that this is somewhere around Denver (west coast central switch) that I seem to be having issues with.
right now I am stuck with qwest, which is the only company that will take me, and they won't let me have faster then 1.5Mbps.
also, quick question, what are the server's specs?
